I used liquid radiance to paint up the fabric. For the red fleshy part I used red with splashes of pink. I decided to experiment to see how the fabric would look if it was folded when dry. The end result was the fabric that was folded underneath turned out a lighter colour. The half that was exposed to light remained the bright colour that I painted it. I looked at the my liquid radiance colour chart and made up a green that I thought was the colour of the outside skin. I mostly used the colour I made up but I did add splashes of blue and yellow to the pieces. Where the pieces look particularly dark I used more blue in those areas. It was a fun personal challenge to see if I could take pattern designed to made in felt and change it around so I could make it from a woven. Thinking about all the steps I needed to change to make it work was a good way to stop and think about the basic fundamentals of sewing. Painting the individual pattern pieces for the first time was a lot of fun as I had to really plan in it in my head of how I wanted the end items to look. DIY Wrapping Paper
DIY Wrapping Paper

Some homemade wrapping paper I made for Christmas but you can make them for any occasion. Clockwise from top left hand corner: Crepe Paper Ruffles. Take 2 lengths of crepe paper streamers, one of which you have trimmed slightly and stitch together on your sewing machine. Then gather the crepe paper, and stitch onto a length of brown paper. (Both the hearts and crepe paper can be done on a small section of brown paper then wrapped around a wrapped present for decoration). Map Paper. I found an A3 atlas of Maine and simply took an inside sheet out and wrapped a present then tied green embroidery thread around it. Penguin & Comic Strip. I took pages from the Children's Pages & comic strip sections of the sunday paper. Our Sunday paper has these sections in the middle so you get a nice big sheet you can use. Heart Paper. I used my Martha Stewart heart punch and punched hearts out of a leaflet on recycling from the local council which had pretty red, yellow & green...

"Indigo Bloom" / 73" x 73" / Latifah Saafir

thequiltengineer.com www.flickr.com/photos/latifahsaafir/ How quick it was to build the petals. I make quilts with single folded bias tape so I have experience working with the stretch of the bias in fabric to mold shapes so that probably helped. But, the petals grow quickly! "How quickly the bias petals sewed up and how dramatic they were. The bias petal is versatile and lends itself to a lot of different interpretations. Also the actual process of making the bias strips was freeing." "Not knowing what to do with the petals once they were completed. I had to learn to trust the flow of the process and just go with it. Unfortunately I had Sherri's awesome Bias Petal quilt in my head and had to force it out so that I could let my own voice shine through." I wanted a super clean background so I decided to raw edge appliqué everything on top of a solid two toned background. I pressed a line of double stick interfacing around the edge of each petal and pressed...

"Sunset Waves" / 87" x 67" / Laura Hartrich

Laurahartrich.tumblr.com www.flickr.com/people/laurahartrich/ instagram.com/laurahartrich "This was my first time ever to sew curves. It was not as scary as I thought it would be! That was a nice surprise. As I was putting my composition together, I felt so unsure of myself and I went through a period of hating the colors I chose, hating the overall composition. However, I kept rearranging and rearranging, and in the end I fell in love with this quilt. I was surprised that I could take this journey with my quilt... from such uncertainty and even distaste, to really loving the end result. That was a new emotional process for me. It was interesting! I guess that's part of the risk and ultimate joy of improvisational work." I discovered that the colors I am naturally drawn to typically fall in the middle of the value spectrum. It was a challenge for me to choose fabrics with a variety of values. I hadn't paid much attention to value before. I think I will be...
