A 1929 Singer sewing machine sits atop a cabinet that Healy made from his home's original shutters. Healy said he found the sign at an antique show in another town, and has never been able to figure out where it might have originally been hanging.
They kept the things that had sentimental value and the things they particularly liked. Still, the Among the antique furniture pieces are china cabinets, an all original Hoosier, a butler's desk, a washstand, cane seat chairs and a treadle sewing
The past few years have witnessed a craft explosion with people turning again to sewing machines, crochet hooks and knitting needles. A bit of creative tinkering could yield fantastic results and, if it doesn't, well, it's not the end of the world. The

A couple of years ago I wanted to make a special wedding gift for a young women who is very dear to me. I thought it would be a good opportunity to play with this block. The colors of her future bedroom were to be turquoise and brown, so I got right to work on the computer to begin playing with color placement. Long story short, I came up with an idea for Kimberly's wedding quilt, plus about 200 other drawings. There are so many things I really love about making these quilts. I love the almost infinite number of different designs you can get, once you start playing around with color placement, and rotating the blocks. Then, you can add another set of variations by either using all the same block, or alternating with a "B" block. The difference between the A block and B block is the position of the lights and darks. The antique quilt in the book, and Kimberly's wedding quilt both have an A block alternating with a B block. I am not sure if one of these options is a true Jacob's Ladder block, and the other isn't, but I have spent a good deal of time playing around with both options. These are simple, basic units that are easy to make, and have many "portable" steps. By portable steps, I am referring to steps you can do even if you do not have a sewing machine handy. When you DO use a sewing machine to do the sewing required on the units, you can just run them through the sewing machine, quickly and easily, instead of spending time to figure out where you left off. You can make these units even when your brain is tired, or you don't have very much time to work, or when part of your brain is doing something else, like visiting with friends, watching TV, or keeping an eye on the stove. If you are a fan of Bonnie Hunter, you can use them as "leaders and enders" while you are making other quilts. I have started a couple of these quilts, but set them aside because this one was really pulling on my imagination. I just couldn't wait to see what it was going to look like, and if the colors were going to work like I hoped. Another reason is because I had to do some traveling, and the way this quilt is laid out really lends itself to working on these "portable" units. Unfortunately, I didn't get all of the units done, so I was still making 4 patch units while I was laying out the sections at retreat, which really slowed me down. Since I am dealing with 4 values, pink, coral, red, and maroon, I wanted to be sure that the pattern was showing up clearly. I started out as a weaver, 15 years ago I took up quilting. I design my quilts, and publish patterns from them. I love scrap quilts-the more fabrics and colors-the better. I enjoy working with traditional fabrics and patterns, and contemporary fabrics such as batiks and Rowan Fabrics. I love to share my designs by doing guild programs, teaching, and making custom quilts.

We have been fortunate to have a wonderful family near and far - the ones born to us far away but many local friends accumulated as neighbors and through work and church and so on. The blue glass bell and bird and bowl come from my grandmother, who is one of the kindest, most giving people I think I'll ever know. After 67 years of marriage and 50+ years in their home, she's asking family to let her know if there's anything around the house we'd like to have. Mom brought these for me a year or two ago. I like to have them in sight (but safe, I'm very clumsy!) to remind me to pray for her and my grandfather, who is fading slowly with Alzheimer's. When our next-door neighbors (and adopted grandparents) passed away, I found this old sewing machine in the alley as their daughter/neice was cleaning out the place. It doesn't have much value as an antique since it was rewired at one point to work with electricity and the designs are a bit worn. But I think it's beautiful and I'm happy...

[detail] Antique Civil War Era shirt A mystery “If this old, hand-sewn, civil war era shirt could talk, there would be an interesting story to tell…. When the shirt is held to the light, the back has been patched on both sides over a ragged hole in the back. The ragged hole does have some dark edges, as if blood soaked. There is what appears to me to be blood stains to the front and back, mostly laundered, but leaving wash stains, although there are spots of blood set in on one of the arms. There is a patch of blue color on the back suggesting to me that some migration of color from a Union uniform during a wash has transpired onto the back which might indicate it was mended and worn again in active duty, if this was worn by a soldier during the Civil War. In addition, there is a stamped name in the lower front edge… a L E Thompson or LE ThomPsa?n? is what I see. I don’t understand why there would be an upper case P in the middle of a name-could this be a private? A stamped name...
