ALBANY — Dewey Hall still can’t believe his eyes. The disabled Army Veteran was the grateful recipient of a $15,000 grant from the Home Depot to Flint River Habitat for Humanity to repair his Cherokee Drive home. A month ago Hall, 71, had a hole in his kitchen ceiling, neither his stove nor his washer and dryer worked and he had a leaky roof. Not anymore, thanks to Habitat and Home Depot. “We’ve partnered with Habitat to let the community know Home Depot is here to help,” the home improvement giant’s assistant manager, Walter Gill, said Friday. “God bless (Home Depot owner) Arthur Blank. Take a look at that roof, it’s beautiful,” Hall said. “All I know is, if I ever run across Arthur Blank, I’m gonna give him a big ol’ hug. Home Depot later donated a washer and dryer. “We chose the homes of five veterans and have completed three. Also taking part in a busy day at Hall’s home Friday were 29 student volunteers from Seton Hall and Mary Washington universities. The students cleaned up Hall’s yard, trimmed hedges and removed broken furniture from the house. “We are with the Seton Hall Habitat for Humanity Chapter,” junior Jimmy Brunn said. “We’ve come down here to do the best we can for these people. I’d rather be helping someone else than to help myself. Hall seemed taken aback by all of the people swarming around his house. “I’ll be honest with you, right now it’s all a little bit overwhelming, I wish they could do it it for all of our veterans,” he said, while moving out of the way of two students hauling a broken credenza to a trailer. I’d like to thank Habitat for Humanity and all of the students for their help. When asked if there was anything else he needed, Hall said, “I have air, water and food.

Day 264 of 365 A few weeks ago our Dryer and Washer both broke. We called the warranty people and a week later a guy came out to look at them and see if they could be fixed. The washer wasn't fixable, but they were going to try and fix the dryer. Two weeks went by and we didn't hear anything. Turns out, finding the part to fix our very old dryer was harder than they thought it would be. The warranty people offered us a buy out on the dryer as well. Tonight we went out shopping for a new washer and dryer. Instead of replacing them in kind, we decided to upgrade from what we had. After stopping at the Sears Outlet, Home Depot and Lowes, we settled on the Whirlpool Duet. While it is going to cost us a lot more than just replacing them with a standard washer and dryer, in the long run we'll save on electricity and water. The Duet is 68% or more efficient. We also get $200 back from Lowes and a $75 check from BGE for buying Energy Star units. It'd be nice if we got back...
