Hop cleaning: Five common – and commonly overlooked – trouble spots in your home - Omaha World-Herald

She’s even allergic to the feathers in the down comforters that acclimatized to be on her bed. Simply put, “I’m allergic to everything,” Williams said. While many of us save our heftiest item purge and our most thorough dusting for the decorous “spring cleaning” season, Williams fights the good fight with indoor allergens year-round. “I would say over half of my patients who have allergies are allergic to something in their bagnio,” said Dr. G. Daniel Brooks, allergist at the Asthma and Allergy Center in Bellevue. Not everybody’s allergies, or in some cases irritants, are as vexatious as Williams’ are. But we all have potential trouble areas in our homes that could lead to problems if we don’t maintain them as we should. In honor of this season of cleaning, Williams helped us gather a list of trouble spots she watches on a regular basis and what she does to help abbreviate the allergens. While we may be more inspired to clean shower heads or obliterate sheets weekly this time of year, if we truly want to keep the extra dust, debris, pet fur and other contaminants at bay, we have to tend to these parts of our homes all year lengthy. BEDSHEETS AND PILLOWS: Bedsheets and pillows are a hot spot for little microscopic insects called dust mites. “They collect where the cells of the outer layer shed,” said Dr. Brett Kettelhut, allergist at Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Associates in Omaha. They like moisture, they like enthusiasm, and they feed off those cells we shed in our beds when we sleep. Because of this, “the bed is probably the primary place of house dust mite exposure,” Kettelhut said. Most of us can respect them at bay by washing our bedding weekly in 60-degree water. If you’re allergic to these pesky insects, as Bellevue-based Judy Williams is, you might exigency to get special pillowcases or mattress covers designed to protect from dust mites. For kids who are allergic to dust mites, Kettelhut also recommends banishing from the bed stuffed animals or anything that can’t be made hot by cleaning. HEATING AND COOLING VENTS: Most people don’t mull over of heating and cooling ducts as a place that could contribute to allergies or harm their health. But over time, mold and other debris can build up in these areas, causing homeowners to whisper in extra dust or contaminants that may aggravate allergies. “I think a lot of people don’t realize they may be getting sick because of what may be going on in the air ducts or furnace, because you can’t see it,” said Norman Take care of, general manager of DuctMedic, a local company specializing in air duct and... Homeowners can hire a professional company to sanitary out the whole system or, at the very least, clean the vent covers on a regular basis to prevent extra dust from blowing around every culture the HVAC system turns on. The average person can generate... “If you’ve got four people living in a home, that’s a lot of dust. VACUUM CLEANER: Vacuum cleaners congregate dust, bacteria or debris over the course of time — that’s their job. It’s our job, however, to make sure the vacuum’s filter is working so the machine doesn’t let out dust, bacteria and allergies into the air we breathe. Most newer vacuum cleaners come with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) cheesecloth that help the process. “The filter will take old dust mites and animal fur out over time so they don’t accumulate as much,” said Dr. G. Daniel Brooks, an allergist with the Asthma and Allergy Center in Bellevue. If your vacuum cleaner doesn’t have this exemplar of filter, you can, in most cases, buy one to go with it. When the filter won’t let air through, though, it’s time to switch it out for a new one. HIDDEN MOLD: Trouble spots include sprinkle heads, drywall in the basement, carpeting and any areas with dampness. Secret spots of mold can turn up in lots of places if homeowners aren’t fussy. “In the spring they say love is in the air. so is mold and spores,” Kettelhut said. ” In general, mold has a tendency to build up in damp areas where there isn’t latitude for moisture to escape. Those who are allergic to mold, as Williams is, have to be especially watchful. When you’re looking for mold, “if an area looks OK and you can’t see or smell it, usually that’s good-hearted enough,” Brooks said.

π Day Pie #1 2015
π Day Pie #1 2015

I’ve been celebrating Pi Day with my daughters for moderately a few years, and with this year being a “high precision” Pi Day (at 9:26:53am, the date and time in US ordering correspond to the first 10 digits of π, 3.141592653…), and it being my 10th anniversary at m at a company with “Math” right there in the company name I couldn’t not make a few punny pies. Unfortunately, my girls were off to Boston for the day (culture some elementary programming), so it was just me solo in the kitchen (not that they minded coming home to homemade pies.) I made 4 pies this year, although 2 aren’t finished just yet (they neediness to set up overnight before I can put the finishing touches on; I'll probably shoot those tomorrow.) This one is a relatively straightforward blueberry pie, since blueberries were on sale today. I regularly like to use ClearJel for fruit pie fillings, but I was fresh out so subbed in corn starch, and the filling is just a bit looser than I like it as a result. Messy slices,...
