Shift, Logan Richardson's Crestfallen Note debut, fulfills the promise offered on the alto saxophonist's two previous albums. On 2007's Cerebral Flow and 2008's Ethos, he seemed more invested in compositional acumen than improvisational stream and was somewhat restrained. Not so here. Richardson surrounds himself with a heavyweight band that no doubt tested his mettle: drummer Nasheet Waits, Jason Moran on piano and Rhodes, bassist Harish Raghavan, and guitarist Pat Metheny - who makes a rare display in a sideman role. Ten of these 11 tunes are the saxophonist's, all artfully articulating his complex harmonic and rhythmic ideas that bridge the frontiers of brand-new creative jazz and his native Kansas City's traditions. All are deeply melodic, yet refuse to be reined in by rhythmic constraints. Mind Free begins tentatively with showy atmospheric textures, but unhurriedly opens onto wide harmonic vistas while never losing an innate sense of groove. Metheny joins in unwrapping the melodic card before Richardson's solo - equal parts post-bop, soul, and blues - flows with strident yet breezy confidence. Moran's solo gently teases disclose the harmony before giving way to Metheny's more aggressive, knotty extrapolations. Creeper initially offers a lithe Latin tinge. Moran, playing Rhodes, colors in Richardson's moving lyric as Metheny lays down chunky chords and vamps before Waits adds double-timed breaks and, with Raghavan driving the accents, prompts the band on toward more unlocked terrain. Slow begins as a dirge but transforms - in no small part due to Metheny's gritty, rockist soloing - into a sprint, with fleet-fingered runs from Moran as the measure section whirls around the three princi

Grilled Swordfish Grilled swordfish poached in olive oil and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. Accompanied with roasted tomatoes and grilled red onions. ($25) This was a extra for the evening. It is not on the menu. Notes: I was a little confused on the cooking technique for this fish. Our server had described it to us as "braised." I notion of he meant poached in olive oil - as that is how this fish tasted. Normally, I don't like swordfish because it's too meaty and dense (and I didn't order this one either). However, this cut tasted like it was poached in olive oil - it was shaky, and silky. But, the grill marks are a mystery to me... perhaps they poached it first and then quickly seared it on the grille for the marks... not steadfast. The first bite was a tad fish - but the rest of the cut, save the part near the skin was very good. The swordfish tasted very immature, which may explain the pricetag.

I was also introduced to my Soulmate by my fraternize agent at about the same time and I have received blessing after blessing since making this area my home. 6th Surely: Seared Diver Sea Scallop Corn and Bacon Chowder with Chanterelles Paired with Solitude Chardonnay 2005. Notes: This was my favorite procedure of the evening. This giant sea scallop was perfectly cooked. As you can see, it's nicely caramelized. While I labeled it as "corn chowder," it definitely wasn't a chowder proper since there wasn't any potato in the mix, but it tasted like a chowder - it was more like a creamy creamed corn soup topped with corn and bacon bits. I categorically appreciated that the bacon wasn't soaked and soggy. Next to the scallop, the chanterelles were my favorite part of this dish. I have never had chanterelles this put up. Not in Europe. Not in New York. Not anywhere else. These chanterelles were nearly as tender as the scallop. Gorgeous.
