Gtech's AirRam has helped overcome my fear of cordless vacuum cleaners without seeking major appliance counseling. Imagine my consumer trauma after purchasing a rechargeable Dirt Devil Broom Vac only to find out when the rechargeable battery no longer recharged, the company (Royal) did not sell a replacement. It only offered a $30 credit toward a new vacuum. The AirRam, thankfully, is not a disposable upright vac. At $299, down from the original $349, it better not be. Gtech, shorthand for Grey Technology, sells lithium-ion battery packs for $79. In regular use the past several weeks, the AirRam proved an excellent convenience tool for spot cleaning... It's good for full-house flooring as long as that flooring is hardwood. It's fair to poor on carpeting depending on the carpet's thickness — the AirRam choked, then shut down, on a high-pile bath mat. Because it has no attachments, it's useless with upholstered furniture, drapes and anything else above floor level. With those restrictions, the AirRam could never displace my brutish, made-in-the-USA Metropolitan Professionals canister vacuum with a stainless-steel body, 4-horsepower motor, four-stage HEPA filter system and multiple attachments, including an... com, close to the AirRam's price class. The AirRam arrived from England — company headquarters are in Spetchley, Worcestershire — with a reputation as a smart vacuum that connects to a computer via USB cable. GTech's software, which switches between three battery modes and monitors battery life, also professed to estimate calories burned. (By the vacuum's operator, not the vacuum. ) If it all sounds gimmicky, the AirRam manual no longer includes references to the software or the vacuum's USB port. "Gtech is actually shifting away from the software aspect due to consumer feedback," says a company representative. How will that affect the company's reference to the AirRam as the "Tesla of vacuums". The AirRam, only 7. 7 pounds, is a vacuum lightweight but a loudmouth: I measured 85 decibels at ear level and almost 95 decibels just above its roller assembly. Gtech positioned the only control, an on-off button, so that some users must reach down awkwardly from the snap-on plastic handle. The battery pack also snaps into the AirRam's body, which uses a stack of four LED strips to show power remaining or recharging progress. This bagless vac divides a removable dustbin into two surprisingly small segments. Gtech recommends monthly cleaning of the vacuum's two filters, part of a removable assembly that sits on top of the dustbin. The brush assembly also needs periodic cleaning, but the AirRam otherwise appears to be a low-maintenance vacuum with low operating costs until the battery expires. The AirRam had the least measurable suction power of 10 stick vacuums tested by CNET earlier this year. Its roller-brush efficiency obviously compensates because it performed well in a head-to-head test with the brutish Metro. Each faced a debris field on both a mid-pile rug and hardwood floor that included two rubber bands, two tacks, two pennies, freshly shorn cat hair, potting soil and a fistful of Kashi GoLean Crunch cereal. On the rug, the AirRam passed every test except two. It merely pushed the tacks until angled upward slightly, off the rug. (The AirRam's handle pivots 180 degrees for easy maneuvering. ) To make the test more fair, I used only the bare-floor attachment for the Metro, which also pushed the tacks before ingesting them with the attachment angled upward. On the hardwood floor, the AirRam executed a clean sweep except it needed a second pass at the cereal. This was impressive performance for a cordless vacuum, though not quite to Gtech's promise of matching corded vacuums on all surfaces. The AirRam is a one-trick vacuum that pays off in both convenience and cordless freedom when used for quick cleanups and hardwood floors. Gtech AirRam upright vacuum with rechargeable battery.

House cleaning has been an innate human activity for centuries, but only since the early 19th century have mechanical devices replaced the physical hard labor (performed mostly by women). Mechanical carpet sweepers were replaced by manual suction cleaners, which in turn were replaced by electric vacuum cleaners in the early 20th century. Innovative inventors, who sequentially improved vacuum cleaners as electricity became commonly available, made these advances possible. Many early manufacturers failed, but some, such as Bissell, Hoover, Eureka, and others, became household words, as they competed for global dominance with improved features, performance, and appearance. This book describes the fascinating people who made this possible, as well as the economic, cultural, and...
